Fraunhofer MP3enc is the successor to l3enc. Based on the codebase of its sucessful predecessor, it offers higher quality and faster encoding.

This encoder also existed as a famous, much pirated ACM codec for the Windows platform, enabling MP3 encoding on most applications able to process WAV files.

Development stopped in late 1998 to favor development of a parallel branch FhG had been developing for some time, called Fastenc. While being much faster than MP3enc (slowenc), it offered similar quality and had enhanced features such as VBR encoding. The MP3enc web page can still be seen at the Internet Archive.

Except for the (full) files below, the MP3enc versions available here are for demonstration and encoding is limited to 30 seconds of audio data. The (full) files are full versions originally distributed by the F.O.S.I. group which also contain a full version of l3dec 2.74. The MP3enc registration info is available within the zip files - a US$ 199 (in 1998 dollars) value!
