MBsoft AAC

MBSoft Encoder MBsoft started around 1998 from Menno Bakker's work on the AAC reference sources.

The encoder, mbaacenc, was more or less a compile of the ISO sources with a nice frontend. A Winamp input plugin was also available.

At the end of 1999 Menno opened the sources of his apps and started the FAAC (Freeware Advanced Audio Coder) project. The project is still alive, and its decoder (FAAD2) is nowadays considered one of the best and fastest AAC decoders - so much so, it was bought by Nero AG to become the Nero AAC decoder (but the free software version is still available). FAAC is also under constant (if slow) development.
