MPEG Audio Encoder is a freeware CD ripper for Mac OS Classic created by Oliver Dreer. It features line-in recording and a pleasing and easy to use interface, but a glaring omission is lack of CDDB support.

Version 2.0 was renamed to MPEG Audio Creator and saw the addition of MP3 encoding support, only to be removed a few days later in version 2.0.1. I suspect the author got a nasty e-mail from Fraunhofer...

Ironically, MP3 support would come back to the ripper in a roundabout way: Xing bought the program from Dreer to make it into the Macintosh version of AudioCatalyst, marking the end of MPEG Audio Creator development.

The author also developed a quite featureful audio player for Mac OS Classic called MPEG Audio Player.

It has playlists, tagging (read only), oscilloscope and spectrum analyzer, and a quite unique feature among players that allows real-time adjustment of the playback speed.

It uses the MAplay decoder up to version 1.61, version 1.7b3 and later use the Xing decoding engine. Development ended with version 1.74.
