Ulead MPEG Converter
Ulead MPEG Converter is a Win16 program that converts AVI files to MPEG
streams.
And what is a video encoder doing at ReallyRareWares? I hear you
ask.
Well, the program also offers an audio encoding mode, as you can see in
the screenshot to the right. Select a bunch of WAV files (it has a nice
batch encoding feature), set encoding parameters for individual files or
for all of them at once - you can select MPEG Layer 1 or 2, bitrate, and
stereo coding mode - click the convert button and let the program do the
rest!
Besides, it's the first MP1/2 encoder for Windows 3.1 at RRW. So now you
can (finally!) start up your 486 DX2 with 8MB RAM, install Ulead MPEG
Converter (it fits in a floppy!), and go about converting your vast WAV
archives. Afterwards, do not forget to grab
XingSound (it will fit in the same floppy!) to playback your brand
new MP2 collection.
There are other pluses: the program is an encoder AND a decoder, so
besides encoding MPEG and MP2 files, it can decode them back to AVI and WAV - with
full VCM and ACM support! On the downside, being a Win16 app, it will
not support long file names. Besides, it requires Win32s to run on
Win 3.1, works fine without further requirements on Win95/98, and does
not seem to work on WinXP at all.
Ulead was bought by InterVideo in 2005, which was bought by Corel in
2006, and the program disappeared along the way. But the MPEG Converter
web page can still be seen at the Internet Archive.
